AMHERST TOWN LIBRARY
STUDENT ART SHOW ~ SAU39
AMHERST & MONT VERNON • MAY 4-31, 2024

On Saturday May 4th the Friends of the Amherst Town Library welcomed over 800 Mont Vernon and Amherst community members, faculty and families to the opening reception of the 2024 Student Art Show: “Adventure.”
Students from all SAU39 schools were represented in this exhibit, with over 425 art pieces on display throughout the library. In addition to paintings, drawings, photography, pottery, print making and mixed media, this year video submissions from Souhegan High School were included in the show. These stop motion animations and short films, some of which have been submitted to the NH Student Film Festival,
played continuously through the reception and were a popular attraction. The highlight of the show this year was a district-wide, kindergarten through high school, collaborative weaving spanning the entire length of the mezzanine’s railing.
The Friends of the Amherst Town Library is an all-volunteer organization supporting the library by supplying museum passes and other program needs, decorating for the holidays, showcasing artists monthly and providing community connection through this annual student art show. This project was accomplished in conjunction with Souhegan’s advertising students who created a media campaign for the show, and the tireless efforts, creativity and enthusiasm of SAU39’s art teachers, many of whom attended the reception to celebrate with their students.
The artwork was on display at the Amherst Town Library through May 30th.

CURRIER MUSEUM OF ART
STORIES OF THE SEA
ON VIEW THROUGH OCTOBER 18, 2024

Vincent van Gogh,
Beach at Scheveningen in Calm Weather,
1882. Private collection.
MANCHESTER – The Currier is thrilled to present Stories of the Sea, a new show that brings together a number of extraordinary loans with a wide array of artworks and objects from the museum’s permanent collection in order to explore various maritime themes.
The selection spans the 16th century to the present day, and includes dramatic seascapes painted in the Romantic tradition; images of steamers and transoceanic travels, referencing migration and tourism; representations of harbors and shipyards; and poetic tributes to the hardships endured by men working at sea.
Stories of the Sea also looks at the ways in which women have been conventionally depicted by the Western art canon in relation to the sea. Although at times seductive and mysterious, as in the case of mermaids and mythological sea monsters, women are more often presented as melancholic and pensive, waiting in anguish ashore for the return of their men. Georgia O’Keeffe’s Cross by the Sea, Canada (1932), one of the most beloved paintings in the Currier’s collection, stands out in this section.
The recent SAU39 Student Art Show at the Amherst Town Library was a big hit! We look forward to what our talented kids do next year.
